Tales I Have Known
February 1-28, 2008
First Friday Reception: February 1, 6-9pm
This exhibit will showcase narrative art, which is traditionally artwork that represents elements of stories. Narrative art has evolved from primitive hunting scenes in the caves of Lascaux, to medieval tapestries, to works by modern masters like Homer, Hopper, Wyeth and Currin. Tales I have Known artists are encouraged to interpret and illustrate their favorite tale, private moment or historic event.
Non-juried.
Artists: Click here for an entry form and deliver actual work to VAE January 25-26 from 11-4pm. This exhibit is not juried. All work adhering to the theme and properly prepared for hanging will be exhibited. Limited to one entry per artist.

19th Annual Young Artists' Exhibit
March 7-20, 2008
First Friday Reception: March 7, 6-9pm
Awards: Elementary: 6.30 pm, Middle: 7.30 pm, High: 8.30 pm

Teachers: Contact VAE about how to enter your students' work.

Unfettered
April 4-24, 2008
First Friday Reception: April 4, 6-9pm
Every once in a while we all need to cut loose. This April, artists are encouraged to enter work that's maybe a little out there. We are removing all size, theme, and media restrictions for this exhibit. All we ask is that it be wired for hanging (if 2D) and structurally sound. Always wanted to make art out of chicken wire and spray paint? Go for it!
Juried.
Artists: Click here for an entry form and deliver actual work to VAE March 28-29 from 11-4pm.

Scope: The North Carolina Landscape
May 2-29, 2008
First Friday Reception: May 2, 6-9pm
Interpretations of the North Carolina landscape by artists from across the state.
Juried.
Artists: Submit application and slides or jpegs by April 1, 2008.

Emulous (desirous of equaling or excelling)
June 6-27, 2008
First Friday Reception: June 6, 6-9pm
This exhibition will be filled with the work of famous artists - recreated by local artists. A tradition in formal art training, reproducing the work of masters is a great way to learn their technique. Artists can mimic an existing work or create original work in the style of their favorite master artist.
Juried.
Artists: Click here for an entry form and deliver actual work to VAE May 30-31 from 11-4pm.

What's in a Name?
July 4-24, 2008
Reception: July 11, 6-9pm (Note! July's First Friday falls on July 4! VAE and many other galleries will be closed.)
In July VAE will present a unique exhibition exploring the role of the title in art. We are issuing artists a special challenge: we'll pick a single title (through a democratic process) and artists will create artwork that interprets it. Over 200 artists voted for their favorite titles to be chosen as the theme for this show and after stiff competition the winning title was MICROSCOSMOS!
Artists: Juried.
Artists: How you interpret it is up to you, but your work must be titled Microcosmos. Stumped? Consult a dictionary and see where that creative mind of yours takes you! Is it small art? Minature worlds? Small minds? Click here for an entry form. To enter deliver entry form and actual work to VAE June 28 or 29 from 11-4pm.

People You Know
August 1-28, 2008
Reception: August 1, 6-9pm
Self portraiture is a time honored tradition. Painters like Rembrandt and Van Gogh documented their artistic and biological maturation through countless portraits and interpretations of their physical selves. People You Know encourages artists to creatively explore the idea of self and to create artwork that reveals some kind of truth about them.
Non-juried.
Artists: Click here for an entry form and deliver actual work to VAE July 25 or 26 from 11-4pm. This exhibit is not juried. All work adhering to the theme and properly prepared for hanging will be exhibited. Limited to one entry per artist.

19th Annual N.E.W. Show
September 5-25, 2008
Reception: September 5, 6-9pm
The Never Exhibited Works (N.E.W.) show represents a cross section of the newest, most innovative work in the state. Pieces of art in every media will make their debuts during VAE's most anticipated show of the year. Be among the first to see exciting new work by artists from around the country and from right here in the Triangle.
Juried.
Artists: Work for this exhibit must not have been publicly exhibited anywhere and must have been created within the last year. Submit application and slides or jpegs by July 12, 2008. Official prospectus coming soon!

Bird's Eye View
October 3-30, 2008
Reception: October 3, 6-9pm
We don't mean to look down our noses but this October VAE's exhibition will get a bit 'lofty.' Bird's Eye View will showcase artwork with a more "heightened" perspective on the world. Artists are encouraged to be creative in their exploration of downward-looking perspective: the view from an airplane, roof, treetop, ladder, cloud.
Juried.
Artists: Click here for an entry form and deliver actual work to VAE September 26 or 27 from 11-4pm.

Educational Exhibit: Graffiti
November 7-26, 2008
Reception: November 7, 6-9pm
Graffiti is a stimulating and under-explored art form. VAE is excited to present this educational exhibit as part of its mission to provide opportunities for all artists while enriching our cultural environment.
Curated.

A Sale for the Season

Coming December 2008 VAE has something wonderful for everyone on your list at prices even Ebenezer Scrooge would jump on.
Non-juried.
