Exchange Gallery
Every month VAE highlights the work of four exemplary VAE artists in its Exchange Gallery. This highly visible retail space in the front windows of VAE's City Market Gallery is excellent exposure for artists and a favorite shopping spot of patrons. Artists are juried into the space annually. For more information contact Rachel Herrick at 919.828.7834 or rachel@visualartexchange.org.

I respond to people and their relationships with each other and their fellow creatures. I paint narrative visual stories of contemporary life that refer back to frescoes painted by Egyptians and Romans depicting everyday life and in the process reconnect us. Bird Houses is a series of smaller paintings. The birds, with bird houses in the background, act as metaphors for ourselves and unconscious hidden emotions, feelings and desires we have about each other and the places we live in: pride, greed, craving, joy, security, safety, creativity.

My paintings on exhibit at the Visual Art Exchange Gallery are part of my Sand Series. The Sand Series began in the fall of 2006. The ideas behind the series are philosophical in nature. This series became my observations on the nature of politics in the world. Three groups of characters emerged: powermongers, indigenous people, and the gods. There is little interaction between the groups, each with their own place in society, unable to assume the attributes of another group. All the characters are blind, and some do not have arms, signifying their helplessness. The three sets of characters exist in a barren world of sand. Distant mountains can be seen, with single buildings, representing the possibility of some kind of future, beyond the formless sand.

I paint in acrylics creating portraits, color studies and mixed media works on canvas. I am noted for use of color and texture resulting in unique interpretations of subject matter, demonstrating influences of German Expressionism and School of Paris painters mediated by Modigliani. I love painting for its sheer physicality, and for its almost spiritual sensation of energy movement that allows me to express feelings without words.

With color, I strive to create vibrant images of joy and light. I like to use a bold, brilliant palette that bursts with motion and energy. My inspiration flows from experiencing the naive and color-saturated art of south Florida, Mexico and southern California. My bright, intuitive paintings are reminiscent of memories and daydreams where the streets are free of debris and filled with whimsical animals and characters. I am dedicated to the joy of art and the discovery of new painterly techniques. Creating motion with color is my ongoing pursuit.
