Artist Statement: Martha Kuper Brinson
Someone once told me while looking at my paintings, "You must have a happy heart."
Not only was this one of the nicest things anyone has ever said to me, it made me realize that I paint what I feel, even more than what I see. If I try to paint when I am troubled, the paintings just don't work for me. My watercolors come from the spirit of the moment. My subjects include seaside and country scenes, botanicals, animals, and abstracts. Recently I've been capturing old farm buildings in my community before they are lost to rapidly encroaching development.
Every single day of my life, I try to surprise someone in some nice way, whether it is a lifelong friend or a total stranger. As an ovarian cancer survivor, I view each new day as a gift, and I try to convey this joy in my paintings. I try every day to help someone who needs me and to give more than I take.
I hope you enjoy my paintings, and if you take one home with you, please know that it was painted with a happy heart.
