Exchange Gallery
Every month VAE highlights the work of four or five exemplary VAE artists in its Exchange Gallery. This highly visible retail space in the front windows of VAE's City Market Gallery is excellent exposure for artists and a favorite shopping spot of patrons. Artists are juried into the space annually. For more information contact Rachel Herrick at 919.828.7834 or rachel@visualartexchange.org.

William Breazeale
The spirit and energy that animates the natural world inspires me to paint. An idea for a painting arises from feelings and sensations I experience when outdoors; the subjects often include broad vistas that dissolve into the distance, an atmosphere in a state of motion and transition, and landscapes that convey a sense of safety and enclosure.
The initial image evolves as I add to or remove elements from the picture to strengthen the composition. Eventually the painting takes on its own life, and as I work I try to discover what the picture wants to become.

Doug Strickland
Since childhood, I have been inspired and motivated by visual art, photography, and the natural beauty of people, places, and scenes around me. I started very early to try to capture on paper in pencil and other media, the things that attracted me visually. Although I have taken art courses, including some in college, I am primarily self-taught in the techniques that interest me and in which I work best.

Lynne Troy
My subject matter usually comes from my surroundings; mostly my home and its interiors. When plein air painting, I love to capture the surrounding landscapes and houses. Sometimes, I will begin with an idea and then paint from my imagination.
One of my greatest inspirations is children's art. It is colorful, direct, imaginative and alive. I enjoy the process of painting, the explorations and the individual ways of seeing, expressing, evolving and changing.

Dick Wayne
All people love stories, especially myself. That's why I enjoy creating narrative paintings. I want to convey a story or arouse a memory that's part of the viewer's personal experience. Or let the viewer create a daydream inspired by the painting. The objects represented in the image are important, but the mood that's created is also vital. So, through the use of design, color and value, a mood is created to give the painting atmosphere and flavor.
