Exchange Gallery

Every month VAE highlights the work of four exemplary VAE artists in its Exchange Gallery. This highly visible retail space in the front windows of VAE's City Market Gallery is excellent exposure for artists and a favorite shopping spot of patrons. Artists are juried into the space annually. For more information contact Rachel Herrick at 919.828.7834 or rachel@visualartexchange.org.

The sculptures in this exhibition are made of metal, stone and natural sisal. "Alters" or "Temples" made of forged metal house natural or carved stones representing memories. Sisal wraps or knots indicate ties to the past, present and future. Placing stone markers requires effort and for me is a meditative celebration of life and human endeavor. These sculptures are trail markers intended to recall worthwhile journeys, lives worth living and events worth recalling.

My ambition with my paintings is to use symbolic shapes and colors to express my deepest emotions and passion for life. This leads me to apply paint to the canvas in unusual ways -- by pouring, splashing, dripping, and scratching. My paintings also require layers upon layers of paint to create a sensuous and turbulent surface texture that is as vital and as complicated as life itself. I use color to allure an imaginative and subtle spatial elusiveness. My abstract expressions are the product of many days of working and reworking.

I'm fascinated by the light that surrounds us. I explore structures and landscapes by day and in the artificial light of night. Houses, homes, darkness and light, backyards and parking lots find their way into my photographs. My photography is full of back roads wandering and chance encounters.

I have always been lured by the road and the mystery of empty highways. I enjoy examining the details in everyday objects and places. I look into the relationship between a place and person and the way culture is expressed in the built environment.

A North Carolina native, Dianne studied art at the College of Great Falls in Great Falls, Montana, home for ten years of her career. In 1974 she began exhibiting in national juried competitions. By the late 70's her paintings had joined private, government and corporate collections throughout North America and abroad. In 1980 her internationally awarded and published works first became available as limited edition fine art reproductions.

My work is characterized by a recognizable style which I have developed over the last two years. As a self taught artist my passion and procedure are really quite simple. I utilize bold colors and dense irregular textured surfaces within my abstract work to express my emotions or to serve as commentary, on the ever changing world around us. Working almost exclusively in acrylic on canvas my current work captures my love of shape and form.
